The Making of Dance
September 9, 2026 1:45 pm - 3:45 pm
How are choreographers supposed to be motivated and inspired to create movement when they are almost always physically alone in the studio? There should be more spaces provided for post-institutional/workshops so dancers/choreographers can consistently practice composition
with others.
This class will provide a safe space, offered weekly, where choreographers can have the opportunity to come together and practice, generating and creating movement with each other. Each week focuses on a different theme, allowing the choreographers to create different material each week. Dancers/choreographers from all different levels can drop in, although they must be 18 and over
to attend.
The goal of my class is for choreographers to discover their unique process through
making dances. This includes learning about their individual thought processes, what they are influenced by, what interests them, and how they problem-solve. From there, a choreographer can discover their strengths and nourish them. By nourishing your strengths, you can find what you’re truly interested in. Lastly, this class will focus on collaborative skills.

evening dance class w/ marion spencer
September 9, 2026 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm
evening dance class is a highly imaginative + highly physical investigation of ourselves as movers. Together, we cultivate a space for building curiosity, community, care and rigor by embracing experimentation, kindness and the joy of movement. This is a laboratory: risk and failure are encouraged, as they are part of the learning process. We work from the body we bring each day, and we are invited to call upon all the techniques and herstories/theystories/histories that our bodies hold. Class begins with a sensation-based collage of improvisation, somatics and set sequences rooted in the technical fundamentals of euro-american release technique and postmodern dance. We follow impulses that lie just beneath the surface of the skin and deep inside our bones. We might engage in consent-based partner stretches and small group improvisation exercises. Class culminates with a set-ish phrase that encourages cultivating individual choicemaking and artistry within the material.
i consider class both a functional and sacred practice. I adore the magic that is created when people come together for the sake of attending to our bodies and creativities. It feels inherently radical- learning, working, building community, sharing practice with no product or end in mind other than the here and now of showing up. Please come get what you need, please ask for what you need. All levels are welcome, however please note that this class is structured for movers & dance artists with a regular physical practice.

evening dance class w/ marion spencer
October 7, 2026 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm
evening dance class is a highly imaginative + highly physical investigation of ourselves as movers.
*All levels are welcome, however please note that this class is structured for movers & dance artists with a regular physical practice who have had the experience of learning choreography.

evening dance class w/ marion spencer
November 11, 2026 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm
evening dance class is a highly imaginative + highly physical investigation of ourselves as movers.

Note: For this class, it's helpful to have some experience with ballet (even if it was many many years ago!) but we do our best to go at a pace that works for both beginners and rusty non-beginners. evening dance class w/ marion spencer
December 9, 2026 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm
evening dance class is a highly imaginative + highly physical investigation of ourselves as movers.

January 20, 2027 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm
evening dance class is a highly imaginative + highly physical investigation of ourselves as movers.
*All levels are welcome, however please note that this class is structured for movers & dance artists with a regular physical practice who have had the experience of learning choreography.

evening dance class w/ marion spencer
April 7, 2027 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm
evening dance class is a highly imaginative + highly physical investigation of ourselves as movers.
*All levels are welcome, however please note that this class is structured for movers & dance artists with a regular physical practice who have had the experience of learning choreography.

July 14, 2027 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm
evening dance class is a highly imaginative + highly physical investigation of ourselves as movers.
